Hey, SPIN! Gang!

For those of you who remember our long lost SPIN! Ride Guide from 2009, Cameron Chambers – well, he has been busy training. Training enough to win another National Championship! Check out his latest blog spot:

Let’s celebrate Saturday!

by JP Shores
October 1st, 2010

Team SPIN!

Well, you all are AWESOME! Seriously, we had a great season of riding together and working toward a common goal. Now it is time to have fun and celebrate your hard work and dedication at the Tour De BBQ! How many of you 3 years ago, 1 year ago, or even 3 months ago thought you would be participating in such an incredible event with fellow cyclist? I know for a fact that this will be the longest distance that some of you have rode a bike ever! Some of you will be going for a PR metric century and some will be happy to get in the 35 miles and enjoy the festivities and rock out to Smash Mouth.

Whatever your goal will be tomorrow, we are all participating in reaching a huge goal and part of something great in KC cycling history! This event will continue to grow and you all will be the catalyst to moving this along. Because you dared to take on this challenge, get out of your comfort zone, and work hard with fellow SPIN! riders, you will be rewarded with better fitness and helping to fight cancer. When you are out there and it is a little chilly in the a.m., or that sting in your legs from the first hill, think about those who would love to be in your position. Instead they are receiving chemo or radiation to fight a hideous disease! You all are special and your efforts will not go unnoticed!

Here are a few tips for tomorrow:

- Make sure you are packed and ready tonight! Bike, Helmet, Shoes, clothes for the ride and after!!
- Make sure you eat some clean carbs in the a.m.! It is imperative that you eat a good breakfast, get up 30 minutes earlier if you must to get in that breakfast!
- Ease into the ride and have patience in the crowd of 1500 cyclists! Seriously, take your time – it will thin out faster than you think. If you are concerned about it, start toward the front and let others pass you!
- Have a bottle of water and electrolyte drink with you at all times. You need to DRINK BEFORE YOU ARE THIRSTY!
- Decide before you ride if you want to make this more enjoyable at the end or during the rest stops? I would recommend not hanging around the stops for more than 10 minutes unless you have an issue. If you really want some BBQ, take a small taste! Save it for the party at the end of the ride.
- Make sure if you have bikes on your roof rack, you do not pull into a parking garage with the bikes on the rack!!!! I have seen it, it is not pretty!
- HAVE FUN! If anything just enjoy the beautiful weather and know that you can do this ride!

This has been my third year working with SPIN! as a ride guide. I cannot thank them enough for putting up with my crazy ideas and saying yes to so many things that continue to benefit cycling in the KC area. I truly appreciate the opportunity and have already started working on some new ideas for 2011! So, enjoy your ride tomorrow and stay tuned to the blog during the Fall and Winter months. You never know what we might have planned for you all next!

See you on the road!

TOUR de BBQ..getting excited, news is starting to come in!

by Gail Lozoff
September 15th, 2010

WOW! This is very exciting. As of this week, we already have 41 of our riders qualified to ride with the SPIN! team at the Tour de BBQ and receive the SPIN! jersey! There are still 6 rides to go, so even if you have 4 or 5 rides under your belt, you can still qualify. And don’t forget that riding in the MS 150 qualifies you for 1 point, and if you come to our September 25 40 mile training ride, you get 2 points. We’re still hoping to get 100 riders to ride in this very fun event. TDBBQ just reported 600 riders so far registered!

ALSO, just found out that the party afterward at P&L is going to feature SMASH MOUTH!!! Just get ready to ride and stay down there in your semi-sweaty clothes and have a blast!

1st Tour De BBQ SPIN! Training Ride a Success

by JP Shores
September 13th, 2010

SPIN! riders gathered at the Lee’s Summit SPIN! location this past Saturday morning to take on the 1st challenge and pedal strokes toward a successful Tour De BBQ event on October 2nd, 2010. For several of the 50 riders in attendance a milestone was hit by completing all 40 miles! They also gained confidence for the long route planned for the Tour De BBQ. And, everyone in attendance gained another point toward the SPIN! team for the Tour De BBQ. A special thank you goes out to Dawn Arnoff, who has really taken to cycling as part of her weekly workout routine via the SPIN! rides. Dawn provided us with a new energy drink that contains no sugar and provides electrolytes for the long haul. You can find out more about this drink by visiting: http://iwantspark.blogspot.com/.

SPIN! will have another training ride in addition to our normal Saturday Lee’s Summit rides on September 25th. Same 40-mile distance with SAG support. As always you get 10% off of food post ride at any SPIN! ride that you attend. Thanks for coming out and we look forward to seeing you at another SPIN! event soon!

Here are this week’s rides and times:

Monday Night Overland Park SPIN!: Stage at 6:00 p.m. We ride at 6:15 p.m. (New Route is the old short route in reverse due to the daylight)

Wednesday Night Main Street SPIN! : Stage at 6:00 p.m. We ride at 6:15 p.m. Short loop only!

Saturday Morning Lee’s Summit SPIN!: Stage at 9:15 a.m. We ride at 9:30 a.m. 15 and 20 mile distances!

See you all on the road!
