Reminder – Bike for the Brain on Monday!

by admin
September 3rd, 2010

Hey, SPIN! Riders!

Just a reminder that we will NOT have our usual SPIN! Ride Monday evening…because we’re biking for the brain instead!

Join us on Monday morning at Johnson County Mental Health Center for a bike ride supporting community organizations providing services to those with mental illness. SPIN! is a proud sponsor of the event and we’re excited to participate. Biking in this event will count toward one of your TDBBQ rides!

Here are the details:

- 10,25,50 and 64-mile rides starting at 8 a.m.
- Non-competitive and untimed 5K fun run/walk at 8 a.m.
- 1-mile walk starting at 10 a.m.
- More info can be found at http://www.bikeforthebrain.org/

Again, come out with us starting at 8 a.m. because there will be no ride in OP that evening. Have a happy and safe Labor Day weekend!

Z Buttar!!!

by JP Shores
August 30th, 2010

SPIN! wants to thank Z Buttar of www.buttar.com for joining us on our Saturday Lee’s Summit Ride! We had an excellent turnout for our ride and everyone did the 20 mile route this Saturday!! Congrats!!

After the ride Z, who is a Category 1 Bike racer and has raced against Lance Armstrong at one point in his career, provided us with an educational open conversation about Nutrition, training for long distance cycling, and how to position yourself properly during group cycling activities. His advice was well-received and appreciated by all who stayed after the ride and dined with us! Remember that whatever your big event is on your upcoming calendar, SPIN! provides rides that can help you build your cycling knowledge and enjoy a healthy meal after your training ride.

Speaking of Training rides, SPIN! will be offering two Tour de BBQ 40 mile training rides on September 11th and September 25th. The rides will stage at 8:15 a.m. and leave SPIN! at 8:30 a.m. We will still have our normal 15 and 20 mile route options staging at 9:15 and starting at 9:30! We can all hang out and enjoy 10% off of food post ride! These are FREE SAG supported rides, so tell a friend and join us on September 11th and September 25th. Let’s make this your best cycling season ever!

See you on the road,

JP

GREAT TIME MONDAY NIGHT!!!!

by Gail Lozoff
August 26th, 2010

94 community riders joined us at SPIN! in Overland Park Monday for a super fun night. U.S. Mountain Bike Hall of Fame member and two-time National Cyclo-Cross Champion Steve Tilford, Brian Jensen–who’s won more than 70 bike races—Nick Coil, Bill Stolte, and Benn Stover joined Monday night’s Overland Park SPIN! Ride on August 23. The elite cyclists who make up the TradeWind Energy/Trek Midwest Cycling Team have been winning major bike races across the country this year. Tilford, an icon among bike racers, introduced the rest of the racing team before they headed out with the SPIN! riders. Lots of people got a chance to gab, ride and even draft with these cool guys. More than 20 cyclists who had never been on a SPIN! ride joined in on the fun. We hope they’ll come back. The TradeWind Energy/Trek Midwest team stayed afterward to eat and visit with our riders. We hope they come back, too!

August 19th, 2010

Hey SPIN! Riders!

Don’t forget Monday August 23rd is the night that we ride with the Tradewinds / Trek Pro cycling team! Come ride with local cycling hero Steve Tilford and his team! It will be the same laid-back routes as we normally do on Monday Nights, only with a few local Pro’s hanging out with us in the pack. Stay for 10% off of food and mingle with some of the top racers in the Region. I am sure we can get Steve to tell us a few stories about his legendary career!

See you on the road!

SEE THE LYTES and HYDRATE!

by rlozoff
August 11th, 2010

It’s hot and we’re sweating out there. Drinking plenty of fluids, mostly water is what we all do. And that’s so very important, because if you dehydrate, not only does performance suffer, but you can also get really sick as well. We need to drink as we ride, and not wait until we’re thirsty. However, consider this. You can drink too much water, and if you don’t replace your electrolytes and complex carbohydrates (whole grains, nuts, fruits veggies, seeds), bad things can happen.

As far as drinking water/fluids, you should be consuming about 24 oz. per hour while riding, which is about one large water bottle. But you should fortify your water bottle with an electrolyte powder to keep you balanced. If you only drink water and you’re sweating profusely, what happens is that you dilute your body, and can easily become hyponatremic (low sodium) which can cause fatigue, muscle cramps, light-headedness, and nausea and even coma. Additionally we’re losing potassium, and trace elements like manganese and tyrosine, while our bodies are burning up a lot of calcium and magnesium.

If you replace what you’re depleting with only water and simple sugars (anything with an –ose like glucose, sucrose, fructose) and not the rest of what necessary, it’s unhealthy. If you do an extended rides or workout, then protein replacement is also necessary.

The bottom line is that I recommend using an electrolyte powder in your water bottle, as well as taking an electrolyte caps when really sweating. For energy the supplements that you can carry in your pocket are great.

My personal favorite powder supplement is Ultima Replenisher. It has almost no sugar or calories, but lots of good electrolytes supplements. There is also a product called HEED, which you can get from www.hammernutrition.com and they also sell Endurolytes, which are electrolytes caps. My favorite gel is Accel Gel because it has a good amount of sodium/potassium, but also some protein in it. Cliff Shot Blocks are gummy cubes that are tasty, easy to carry and give you instant energy.

After your ride or workout, it’s important to consume protein and complex carbohydrates, which is why we eat at SPIN!
